Nicolas Engele was born in 1986 in Ulm. He spent his childhood and youth in Rochester (NY, USA), Neu-Ulm and Leipzig (Germany).

Between 2006 and 2008 he studied architecture at the University of Applied Sciences (HTWK) in Leipzig. Subsequently he began studying painting and graphics in the class of Professor Thomas Rug at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and graduated in 2014.

Already during his studies, his artistic style gradually changed from a figurative to a largely non-figurative one. To this day he is inspired by the works of the american minimal art and by the relics of socialist architecture, which are still present in the states of former East Germany. Nicolas Engele transfers these influences to his very own artistic system of picture production, in which he mainly works in serials. His methodical approach is illustrated by the core element of all his works: the orthogonal grid.

Over the years, Nicolas Engele has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, amongst others in Berlin, Hamburg, Mainz, Quedlinburg, Magdeburg, Leipzig, Halle (Saale), Warsaw and Saint Petersburg. In 2015 he received a work scholarship from the Art Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt.

Nicolas Engele currently lives and works in Halle (Saale).
